Description

The Camden Ionosonde station near Sydney, NSW, Australia, has Ionosondes since November 1980. The first analog ionosonde with 16 mm film was operated between 03/11/1980 and 31/12/1984. According to the SWS archived Weekly Station Summary, there was a Kel aerospace sonde (06/11/1981) and an IPS 4C (20/10/1982) and an IPS 4B (12/06/1984 to 31/03/1985). According to INAG-53, The Autoscaling had been tested (as well as trained) on over 400 ionograms obtained with a prototype 5A ionosonde run at Camden, near Sydney, in September 1987 and February 1988. There was an IPS 4C digital ionosonde between 06/1997 and 04/2003, an IPS 4D digital ionosonde between 02/1999 and 12/2004, an IPS 5C digital ionosonde between 04/1991 and 10/1999, and a CADI ionosonde between 07/1997 and 11/2014. There is an IPS 5D ionosonde since October 1995 to now. The 5D vertical digital sounding ionosonde normally sweeps in frequency from about 1.0 to 21.5 MHz. Frequency step resolution for the 5D is 5 kHz, with up to 4095 steps available. The step interval is variable, becoming more coarse at higher frequencies as ionograms are generally displayed on a logarithmic scale.
