Thermal Ion Trap (ALPHA-3)

ResourceID
spase://SMWG/Instrument/Interball-2/ALPHA3

Description

The ALPHA-3 experiment is designed to study cold magnetospheric plasma, and identical instruments are installed on both Interball Tail and Interball Auroral Probe. The instrument uses planar electrostatic analyzers, with a planar modulating potential analyzer. The collector effective area is 11.3 square cm, and the range of current measurements is 1.E-13 to 1.3E-8 A. The energy range of the registered particles is 0 - 25.5 eV. The minimum measurable density of protons is 1 per cc for an ion temperature of 1.E4 K and for the analyzer directed along the velocity vector.
For more details, see the article by V. V. Bezrukikh and K. I. Gringauz at pp. 215 - 221 of "Interball Mission and Payload," a joint publication of RKA, IKI, and CNES (1995).
