Spherical Elementary Currents Systems (SECS) technique Equivalent Ionospheric Currents (EICs) derived at 10 sec Resolution in Geographic Coordinates

(2009). Spherical Elementary Currents Systems (SECS) technique Equivalent Ionospheric Currents (EICs) derived at 10 sec Resolution in Geographic Coordinates [Data set]. University of California, Los Angeles. https://doi.org/10.21978/p8d62b (CiteAs link). Accessed on .

Description

The Equivalent Ionospheric Currents (EICs) data set contains horizontal ionospheric current data (Jx and Jy) derived using the SECS technique [Amm and Viljanen, Earth Planets Space, v. 51 pp. 431-440, 1999]. Positive Jx points to the geographic north pole. Positive Jy points to geographic east. The location of these currents is in geographic coordinates at 10s resolution. The distribution of these currents is not the same as the spherical elementary current amplitudes. The UT and date are obtained from the file name. For more information see Weygand et al. J. Geophys. Res. 116, A03305, doi:10.1029/2010JA016177, 2011.

Parameter #2
Name
Equivalent Ionospheric Currents (Jx and Jy)
ParameterKey
Jx_Jy
Description

These data are the Equivalent Ionospheric Currents (only the currents horizontal to the surface of the Earth: Jx and Jy) in units of mA/m at 10 s resolution. The Altitude of the current vector is 100 km above the surface of the Earth.

Caveats
The date and time are obtained from the file name. These are not the Hall currents, but a combination of the Hall and Pederson currents.
